Implementing BOPIS and Click-and-Collect in 2026: The Omnichannel Playbook

Buy-online-pickup-in-store turns your shops into fulfillment assets — if inventory, POS and notifications actually work together. The 2026 playbook for getting BOPIS right the first time.

Implementing BOPIS and Click-and-Collect in 2026: The Omnichannel Playbook

Buy online, pick up in store — BOPIS, or click-and-collect — is the rare retail capability that pleases everyone: shoppers get their item today without delivery fees, and retailers get a store visit, where one in several pickups turns into an additional purchase. Done well, it's a loyalty engine. Done badly, it's a customer standing in your shop waiting for a product that isn't there.

Why it matters more in 2026

Delivery expectations keep rising while margins tighten. BOPIS flips the last mile into a first party: the customer does the driving, the store does the handing over, and the brand captures an incremental-sale opportunity most delivery flows never see. For Hong Kong and Southeast Asian retailers with strong store networks, it's often the highest-ROI omnichannel move available.

The five pieces that must work together

  • Accurate, real-time inventory. The single point of failure. If the site promises a product the shelf can't honour, you've manufactured a bad experience at scale. This means stock accuracy at variant and location level — often the push retailers need to finally fix their product data.
  • POS integration. The pickup must complete on the store's till — payment reconciliation, tax handling and the ability to upsell in person.
  • Operational workflow in-store. A named owner, a staging point, and a pick-and-hold SLA measured in minutes, not vibes.
  • Notification choreography. Order received → ready for pickup → reminder → expiry, each message timed and branded.
  • Returns and exchanges at pickup. The reverse journey is part of the promise.

Start narrow, then expand

Launch with your two or three best-run stores and a curated product set. Measure pickup conversion, in-store attach rate and time-to-ready. Then roll out on the evidence.
